The picture shows the first DonMo Galvo to come to the USA from Australia.
It is made of galvanised tin. Both Jake and James Hill have played it. Those are Emu tracks. All three are strung with Aquila strings. The middle is a Johnson engraved brass resonator. The 1931 Dobro mandolin is claro walnut body with engraving on the tailpiece and the resonator coverplate. It is strung as Gg Cc ee aa.
There are different instruments which can be restrung with ukulele strings so you can begin with what you have. I have six different styles of mandolins which play well and sound nicely. Some are with four strings and some are with eight. Some strings sets have a low and a high pair, while others are the same octave, but are just doubles. (That's why I have more than one of a couple of different styles) The voicings are noticeably different.
Banjos of all sizes make nice banjo ukuleles. I also have a balalaika tuned C_E_A. The Cuban equivalent of a ukulele is called a tres.
Little guitars also make a nice baritone sized uke. They can be strung as D_G_B_E or G_C_E_A as linear (low 4th) or reentrant (high 4th)
Cavaquinhos make great ukuleles! It is the body of a tenor on steroids with a concert neck.
It takes Concert strings, so it is G_C_E_A tuning only.
Tiples are the size of a tenor ukulele. They have double -triple - triple - double stringing. Mine are tuned Dd GgG BbB ee.
